Problems With Equality in Education

High schools are coming under pressure from the federal government to improve the nation's dismal dropout rate -- one in four students.

"In this country today, half of our minority students do not get out of high school on time. That's outrageous," Spellings said in Columbia, S.C.

Making schools responsible for progress in every group of students puts pressure on schools to improve.

Problem: not every student is equal, and up to half of them would be happier in vocational education.

"Solution": insist the system find some way to pass them, which inevitably means the dumbing down of material.

Problem: this penalizes smart kids who need to learn and advance, because schools are catering to those who cannot.
